Case Study: Linguistic Analysis and Pre-localization of Technical Training Course

A leading global technology company in creative software and professional tools required an advanced review of one of its training courses prior to multilingual localization.

The project, managed by an international language services agency, was to anticipate potential translation and cultural localization hurdles before the content was formally translated.

The Challenge

  • Analyze a complete course, in English, dedicated to one of the main vector design applications, in order to detect possible problems of ambiguity, cultural references, ill-defined technicalities and poorly localizable structures.
  • Clearly document in detail any elements that could hinder an accurate or natural translation into Spanish or other languages.
  • Prepare a report with practical conclusions and suggestions for improving the localization of the course prior to its implementation.

Project conditions:

  • Intensive review in a limited time frame (1 week), with an estimated volume of 20-24 hours.
  • Slow connections to the course access server and no possibility to copy/paste images, so each finding had to be described with textual precision.
  • Need to work with two devices simultaneously to visualize and document content efficiently.
  • Possibility of participation in validation meetings with the customer and the technical team.

My Role

I was selected for my bilingual profile and experience in linguistic and cultural adaptation of technical content. My tasks included:

  • Thorough review of the course in English, from the perspective of a localization professional.
  • Detailed documentation of linguistic and structural issues, including cultural references, ambiguous constructions, technical terms without context and structures that could lead to translation errors.
  • Writing a structured report with analysis and recommendations to the content development team.
  • Participation in feedback sessions with the client to clarify doubts and propose linguistic and strategic solutions.

Results

The delivered report allowed optimizing the original content in English prior to translation, saving time and resources in later phases of the localization process.

Critical elements that would have affected the comprehension or accuracy of the translation in several languages were identified, especially in technical content.

The collaboration with the client’s team was positively valued, and the proactive approach facilitated better planning of future courses.

An ongoing collaboration was established to participate in at least four additional courses, consolidating a relationship of trust with the agency and the end client.
